Every year, Volunteer Appreciation Week, observed during the third full week of April, offers an opportunity to recognize the people who give their time, presence, and compassion to others. In hospice care, volunteers often become an important source of comfort for patients and families during one of life’s most emotional seasons.
At Orange Hospice, volunteers are a deeply valued part of the care team. Their role reaches well beyond day-to-day support. They offer companionship, moments of joy, and much-needed relief for families carrying emotional and physical responsibilities.
This week, we are proud to celebrate the individuals whose generosity continues to make a lasting difference across Orange County.
The Meaning of Volunteers in Hospice Care
Hospice care supports the whole person as well as the family surrounding them. While nurses, physicians, chaplains, and social workers provide professional medical and emotional care, volunteers offer something equally meaningful: time and presence.
For many families, even a short visit can ease the weight of an overwhelming day.
A volunteer may stay with a patient so a loved one can rest, attend an appointment, or step away for a moment to reset. Sometimes support comes through conversation, shared silence, music, a gentle hand massage, or the visit of a therapy animal.
These moments may seem small in the moment, but they often become the memories families hold onto later.
Because hospice centers on quality of life, volunteers help preserve dignity, human connection, and emotional support throughout every stage of care.
The Impact Our Volunteers Made in 2025
The dedication of Orange Hospice volunteers is reflected in the extraordinary amount of time they have given over the past year.
In 2025 alone, volunteers contributed more than 1,114 hours of direct patient care through Orange Hospice’s special programs, including:
They also provided more than 427 hours of administrative and bereavement support, helping families and staff in ways that are often less visible but deeply meaningful.
Together, that adds up to more than 1,541 hours of service in one year.
Those hours represent far more than numbers on a report. They reflect visits at the bedside, conversations that eased loneliness, support for grieving families, and opportunities for loved ones to step away knowing someone caring was present.
Special Programs That Bring Comfort and Connection
One of the ways Orange Hospice volunteers make such a meaningful difference is through specialized support programs designed to bring comfort and emotional connection.
Hugs for Hospice
This program centers on companionship and emotional reassurance. At times, what someone needs most is simply another person sitting beside them, listening, and helping the room feel less heavy.
Paw-sitive Visits
Animal-assisted visits often bring warmth, joy, and a sense of calm. For many patients, time spent with a therapy animal can ease anxiety and create moments of happiness.
Pamper Program
Small acts of comfort, such as gentle hand care, light grooming, or soothing touch, can help patients feel cared for and relaxed.
Healing Concerts
Music often reaches places words cannot. Volunteers who participate in Healing Concerts help create peaceful, reflective moments for patients and their families.
Each program supports a different part of the hospice experience, helping patients feel seen, cared for, and less alone.
A Volunteer’s Perspective

As volunteer Caitlin shared:
“Through volunteering with Orange Hospice, I truly can see how much they care for their patients. They are so incredibly quick to provide more volunteer services to patients when they are able to, be communicative with the patient’s family, and overall just be the best support they can throughout this experience. The staff is incredibly nice and truly cares, and it reflects in their work.”

Joyce, a family member of a late patient, shared:
“We’re so grateful for the care our grandmother is receiving from Orange Hospice. From the start, the team has been kind, attentive, and made everything so much easier during an overwhelming time…The volunteers have been a blessing, giving us needed breaks while making sure she’s never alone. Their kindness has given us peace of mind…We can’t thank Orange Hospice enough. If you need compassionate, respectful care for a loved one, we highly recommend them.”
