Hospice care in Anaheim
Orange Hospice provides hospice care at home in Anaheim. Visits happen where the person lives — a private home, an assisted living community, or a skilled nursing facility.
Hospice is comfort-focused care for someone whose doctor believes the illness has a prognosis of six months or less if it runs its usual course. Eligibility is reassessed as care continues, and the benefit can carry on while the person still qualifies.
Questions families ask before choosing hospice
- Do we have to move the person somewhere to get hospice? No. Hospice is delivered where the person already lives — a house, an assisted living community, or a skilled nursing facility — so a move is not part of starting hospice. Medicare covers short inpatient stays only for symptom management or respite, arranged by the hospice team.
- Can hospice happen at home? Yes. Most hospice care happens where you live, including care settings other than a private house.
- Can we keep our own doctor? Yes. You may keep your primary doctor; our hospice medical director also helps guide the plan and supports the care team.
- What if my loved one improves? A person can leave hospice if the condition improves, and return later if needed.
- How soon can services start? Services can often begin quickly after eligibility is confirmed. Call to discuss timing and next steps.
- What if our family speaks another language? Interpreter services and printed materials in common languages can be arranged.
What hospice care includes
- Pain and symptom management from the clinical team
- Emotional and spiritual support for the patient and the family
- Help with bathing, dressing, and daily needs from hospice aides
- Medications, supplies, and equipment related to the hospice diagnosis
- 24/7 phone support for urgent needs and guidance
- Education for family caregivers, so it is clear what to expect and how to help at home
Respite for the family caregiver
If the person doing most of the care needs a break, the hospice benefit can cover inpatient respite care in a Medicare-approved facility for up to five days at a time, on an occasional basis, arranged by the hospice team, with a small copayment (5% of the Medicare-approved amount). Respite is part of the hospice benefit rather than a separate home-care service. The respite care page explains what Orange Hospice arranges.
Coverage and cost
Most hospice care is covered by the Medicare Hospice Benefit, Medi-Cal, and many private insurance plans, including visits from the hospice team. Room and board in a facility are usually not covered by Medicare. Benefits are verified before care begins, and coverage questions are answered in plain language. More detail is on the hospice eligibility guidelines page.
